Summary: Quite simply, this is the best Indian restaurant I have been to. It’s a fantastic experience and I have been there so many times the owner now knows Natalie and I by name. The owner is a fantastic host, provides fantastic service and an extensive knowledge of food and wine. Whilst I’d vouch for pretty much everything on the menu I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying, do make a point out of trying their specials. I do have my favourites, the entree Bombay Potatoes and Pumpkin Masala main, tend to usually make their way onto my order. Trying out the specials however, just makes it that extra bit exciting. They’re frequently updated and always an intriguing combination of ingredients. On this occasion, I think the Crispy Chicken was the best Indian dish I have ever tasted: crispy, spicy with green peppers, brown onion, and garlic. Delicious!
The service by the staff here is generally fantastic. The owner in particular is attentive, enthusiastic, and has a strong vested passion for good food and wine. The downside is, the service here is often very, very slow. That’s fine for me with good company, but if you’re looking for a quick meal, this just isn’t the place. The quality of food and reputation sees this place absolutely packed on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening, so be sure to make a booking in advance. The restaurant is BYO wine only. However, they do have a wine list and I’m sure given the owners passion for wine, it wouldn’t be disappointing. Our choice for the day was fantastic: a lighter wine, ridiculously smooth to drink, and nicely balanced off the spicy nature of the food. The atmosphere is cozy, dim and comfortable with nice ambiance. The price is very affordable too! Aim for an entree and main to share per person. If you’re looking for good Indian food in the South East region of Melbourne, give Tantra a visit!!
